Winter Gasshuku (Trek and Train)

On the clear, brisk Saturday morning of January 28, 2023, a group of dedicated USKL students, parents, and instructors met at Higginbotham park in Claremont for the annual DAC Winter Gasshuku (special training).

Winter Gasshuku (合宿, training camps) are a tradition in the Budo arts - a way of beginning the new year with a renewed and enthusiastic spirit to guide us forward with a strong and positive attitude while prioritizing health and fitness for the year ahead.

At 8:00 AM we began by ascending a steep hill with various plateaus overlooking the scenic valley below.  Approximately 45 min into the trek we arrived at a large clearing where we began our Martial Arts workout.  Dr. Dave began our warmups with a Yoga exercise called Salute to the Sun - very appropriately directed toward the sun rising in the East. We then went through various basic training exercises, including punches, kicks, and blocks, led by Senseis Ty & Lynn Aponte and Chris Becker.  Sensei Tim Richmond demonstrated an Iaido technique applicable to karate and then performed an Iaido kata using a boken (wooden sword). Sensei Christie Vella Kramer led the group through a mindfulness meditation and Phillip shared some positive insights using the theme of the gasshaku of directing our intentions towards a strong and positive New Year.  "The Best in you is measured by the worst you can endure.”

After the cooldown we hiked down the hill and enjoyed a potluck breakfast in the warm morning sun.  While the kids played in the playground area and on the grass, the adults talked, shared stories and enjoyed each others’ company.

It was a great way to start the New Year. We look forward to our summer special training at the beach and hope that everyone will join us.
