Jiyu Kumite (Sparring) Class

 

❖    Sundays 12 noon - 1:30 pm (Ongoing)

❖    All ages (youth, teens, adults) and ranks (Orange through Black Belt) welcome:

(must already have some general working knowledge of Karate skills).

❖    DAC members – free/no charge, Nonmembers $10.00 per class

❖    Students from other Dojos welcome

This Class will focus on Jiyu Kumite (sparring) drills and footwork, fighting techniques, strategies and mentality, bag work, sweeps, throwing and falling, vital points and real combat applications, applying kumite techniques with a partner.  Refereeing skills, rules and strategies.

Instructors:

Sensei Tom Heyman has been practicing Shotokan Karate since 1975 and holds a Yodan (4th Deg. BB), awarded by Master Tsutomu Ohshima, Shihan of the Shotokan Karate of America. A top tournament competitor for many years, and Captain of the American Team in France in 2004, Tom was a Main Referee at the Nisei Week Tournament for over 10 years and co-wrote the Official SKA Tournament Rules and Regulations. 

Sensei Ariel Heyman is a World Champion and three-time National Champion in Shotokan Karate of America (SKA) Women’s Division. Ariel has trained and been coached by some of the best tournament jiyu kumite fighters and teachers in the world, and has been a top competitor in national and international tournaments for over ten years. Now a Main Referee at the Nisei Week Tournament, Ariel holds a Sandan (3rd Deg. BB) with SKA and has been practicing Shotokan Karate since 1992.
